Rev. Chuck Poole

Chuck Poole served as Pastor of First Baptist Church of Christ at Macon from 1986-1995, working his way into the hearts of the people of this congregation. Chuck wrapped up an extraordinary 45-year pastoral journey in 2022—one that left its mark across Georgia, North Carolina, Washington D.C., and Jackson, Mississippi. His ministry wasn’t confined to the pulpit; Chuck’s voice resonated in classrooms too, where he served as a visiting preacher and educator at notable institutions such as Mercer University, Furman University, the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, Duke University’s Baptist House of Studies, McAfee School of Theology, Campbell University, Mississippi College, Gardner-Webb University, and Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

In Jackson, Chuck became a beloved fixture as the founding teacher of the Wood Street Bible Class, a role he faithfully held for 21 years. His words found life not only in sermons but also in print—he authored nine books, countless articles, a gospel song, and lyrics to three hymns. His ministry extended beyond the church walls, too, as he stepped into the streets as a “minister on the street” and became a passionate advocate for interfaith dialogue and inclusion.

Now living in Birmingham, Chuck and his wife Marcia remain deeply engaged in community life. Chuck currently serves on the staff of Together for Hope, continuing his legacy of compassion and service. They are the proud parents of Joshua and Maria, and the very proud grandparents of ten cherished grandchildren.

One Last Word

“The truth about Judgement. We are Sinners in the hands of an Aching God. All sins cause some suffering, but not all suffering is caused by some sin….

Project yourself on to your death bed…from that vantage point what do you wish you had done with your life?

I have an enormous emotional investment in this! Think, use your brain! Don’t let the words conservative and liberal work on you!

One last word about Jesus. In the life of Jesus we have the best look about who God is, how God acts and what God wants.

Words about prayer almost always conceal as much as they reveal. Be real careful around preachers who are eager to tell you how to make prayer work. Intimate, enormous, simple and mysterious gift from God-Prayer.

A line has been drawn between a distant nonchalance and a cool self-concious spirituality (no room for mystery or wonder). If my all consuming passion is to be right then I need you to be wrong!

A lot of people have had to struggle with the nature of scripture after being forced to by the shifting of the Baptist landscape.

One Last Word-The Last Word-Grace

by Rev. Chuck Poole

As I climbed these three stairs 9 years ago they seemed so steep. There’s been a lot of stuff inbetween. All the babies born and all the loved ones we’ve buried. The comings and goings of the rhythm of life. We’ve received more Grace than we’ve given. One last word…Grace today but also the last word any of us will ever hear.
